Professor of Petrology
Department of Geology, University of Oslo,
PO Box 1047 Blindern, 0316 Oslo 3
Bjørn Jamtveit (born 1960) received his cand. mag. in geology
(1982), cand. scient. in geology "Magmatic and metamorphic evolution of the
Eiksunddal eclogite complex" (1986), and his Dr. scient. "Fluid-rock
interactions during metamorphism" (1990) from the University of Oslo
(UiO). He held an assistantship in the Department of Geology at UiO
(1985-87) and received a post-doc. scholarship from NFR (1990-91). He
received the Odd Hassel research grant from the Norwegian Research to
go to the University of Bristol, UK (1991-1993). Bjørn Jamtveit has
been a full professor at the University of Oslo since 1993.
He has been a vistor at University of Bern, Switzerland (1989), The
Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, USA (1988), and ETH Zurich,
Switzerland (1985). Bjørn Jamtveit is the project leader of 12.8
mill NOK (1.1 mill. $) 'Strategic University Program' ("Fluid-
Rock Interactions") at the University of Oslo, funded by the Norwegian
Research Council. (1997-2001). Currently the largest project at the
Departement of Geology at the University of Oslo. He is the
administrative head of the bedrock geology division at the Departement
of Geology (1993-) and head head of the advisory board for the
laboratories at Dept. of Geology. He is also a member of the
Departemental Board and has previously been member of the
Departemental Council (1993-1997).
Professor Jamtveit serves as a scientific advisor for the Norwegian
Geological Survey (1997-) and is the organizer of the 'Kongsberg
seminar' - an annual / biannual high quality-, process- oriented-,
crossdiciplinary-, international-, conference.
He was elected Vice Chairman and Chairman for Gordon conferences on
'Pattern formation in Earth Sciences' in 2000 and 2002 respectively.
He was elected as leader of a one year research project ('Dynamics of
Fluid Rock Systems') at the Centre for Advanced Studies at the
Norwegian Academy of Science in the period 2000-2001.
Bjorn Jamtveit is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science since
1996. He received the Reusch Medal from the Norwegian Geological
Society in 1993, and the Odd Hassel stipend in 1991. He received the
Hans and Helga Reusch's Legacy from the Norwegian Geological Society
in 1987. Bjørn Jamtveit has edited two books: Jamtveit, B. and
Yardley, B.W.D.(eds.), Fluid flow and transport in rocks:
Mechanisms and effects, Chapman and Hall, London, 319 pp. (1996) and
Jamtveit, B., and Meakin, P., (eds) Growth, dissolution and pattern
formation in Geo-systems. Kluwer Academic, Dordrecht, Holland (1999).
He has published more than 30 papers in refereed international
journals. His present research interests include metamorphic petrology
and geochemistry, crystal growth and zonation, fluid geochemistry,
fluid flow and mass transport during regional and contact
metamorphism, and pattern formation in Geo-systems.
